Description:This is an interesting and quite useful new book covering the course and prognosis of the major developmental neuropsychiatric disorders in adulthood. Written and edited by two leading experts in this field, this book is a valuable contribution to this literature.
Purpose:The purpose, according to the editors, is to "examine some relatively well-known conditions with an onset in childhood but from a developmental perspective. What happens when they grow up?" It is the editors? hope that "providing an accessible and up-to-date account of what happens to children with developmental disorders as they progress to adulthood ... [will make] the journey both for them, and those caring for them," easier.
Audience:The intended audience is clinicians involved in the care of individuals with developmental disorders. Pediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, speech pathologists, and neurologists would benefit their patients by knowing the information contained in this book.
Features:The book is divided into 12 chapters. The disorders reviewed include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, developmental language disorders, reading and learning difficulties, metabolic disorders, cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, Fragile X, Prader-Willi and Angelman syndromes, Rett syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, Williams and Smith- Magenis syndromes. Each chapter ends with recent and useful references and the index section is helpful.
Assessment:The book is essential reading for any clinician involved with children or adults with developmental neuropsychiatric disorders. I highly recommend it.
