Where characters are not available, the most commonly employed contemporary romanization is used, as in Käo Ku San. Finally, the reader may assume that Tengchow, unless specifically noted otherwise, always refers to the city of that name and not to Tengchow prefecture. He may also assume that Tengchow and all similar representations (Tungchow, Tung Chow Foo, Tengchowfu and so on) that appear in quotations refer to the city in Shantung province-and in no case do they refer to the town of Tungchow (T'ung-chou) near Peking or to Tungchow (Nan-t'ung) in Kiangsu province.
