His research program is directed towards understanding the complex pathophysiology of OA and identifying new therapeutic strategies to identify and counteract the destruction of the articular cartilage during OA. Specifically, his research is focused towards (a) understanding the mechanisms that are essential for maintaining articular cartilage homeostasis and mechanisms that trigger cell death and articular cartilage damage, and (b) identifying new OA biomarkers. Dr. Kapoor has published over 50 research articles, reviews and book chapters and is a recipient of several prestigious research awards. Dr.^Nizar Mahomed is head of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University Health Network and Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto, Canada. He is Nicki and Bryce Douglas Chair and Smith & Nephew Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery. Clinically he focuses on complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery.
