Die Bibliotheca Teubneriana, gegründet 1849, ist die weltweit älteste, traditionsreichste und umfangreichste Editionsreihe griechischer und lateinischer Literatur von der Antike bis zur Neuzeit. The variety of literary genres--praise, political treatise, satire, apologia, letter--allows readers to grasp a thorough knowledge of the history and culture of the Byzantine Empire during the Nicaean period (XIII century).

Das bekannte Enniuswort, daß auf „den alten Sitten und Männern die römische Sache ruht”, akzentuiert treffend die große Bedeutung, die der mos maiorum als Inbegriff von Wertvorstellungen, Leitbildern und Reglements, welche als verpflichtendes Erbe der Vorväter aufgefaßt wurde, in der römischen Gesellschaft besaß. Ennius' well-known saying that "the Roman cause rests upon the old men and customs" highlights appropriately the significance of the mos maiorum in Roman society, as the epitome of values, precedents and conventions, understood as obligations inherited from the forefathers. Besides essays on the various literary forms of communication dealing with the mos maiorum, the depiction of Roman values in the archeological record is also covered.
