Reviewer:Robert A. Equi, MD(Johns Hopkins Hospital)
Description:This is a review of ocular surface disease covering normal anatomy and physiology, a description of general pathophysiologic mechanisms, and a detailed review of selected disease entities focusing on surgical management of ocular surface disease and the use of adjuvants to surgical therapy.
Purpose:The authors set out to present a concise review of a complex topic. One of their goals is to clarify complicated management issues including the use of immunosuppresives in the treatment of ocular surface disease. They also present a brief but relevant review of the immune mechanisms as they relate to specific ocular surface disease entities. These are all worthy objectives and, overall, the authors accomplish their objectives and present a nice balance between description of disease and recommendations for intervention.
Audience:The authors do not specifically identify an audience that they wish to target but it is clear that this is a book geared toward the subspecialist in cornea and external disease. The authors are among the most respected in their field and have established themselves as authorities in the topics that they present.
Features:The book is aptly titled as it is limited to a discussion of ocular surface disease. The book excels in outlining complex surgical and medical management options for these diseases. Specific techniques are discussed and the latest information on pathophysiologic mechanisms and how they relate to management decision making is reviewed. Photographs and figures are well represented in each chapter.
Assessment:The book is written on a very specific topic and therefore has few competitors. Overall, it is a very worthy review on a complex topic.

The anatomical ocular surface is composed of the mucosa that lines the globe and palpebral surfaces, the corneoscleral limbus, the corneal epithelium, and the tear film.
