Technical and economical developments in the media spread increasingly beyond national borders. Occasionally this also applies to the contents and formats of media. Yet research in general and also in the field of media psychology is done on an entirely national scale. Results, methods and theories of research in Europe are very often acknowledged only when they are published in American journals. In the present volume, well-known media psychologists from several European countries discuss new perspectives and schemes for cooperation on subjects such as content analysis, parasocial interaction with TV characters, television and language, and the impact of TV broadcasts on the audience, thus preparing the ground for further integration in the research of media in Europe. Recent Trends in European Media Psychology Tom van der Voort & Peter Winterhoff-Spurk 1. Introduction This book contains most of the papers presented at the three-day workshop "Psychology of Media in Europe," which was held in Otzenhausen, Germany, May 21-23, 1995. The Otzenhausen conference was the third, biennial meeting of European media psychologists. In July 1991, the first meeting was held at a symposium conducted at the 2nd European Congress of Psychology in Budapest. One of the conclusions reached at this symposium was that judging by the growing number of chairs established in media psychology as well as by the availability of introductory textbooks and a scientific journal devoted to this field of study (Medienpsychologie), media psychology had developed into a relatively autonomous branch of psychology, especially in the former Federal Republic of Germany. The second conclusion was that it was advisable to strengthen the ties between European researchers who are active in this new field of enquiry. In addition, the need was felt to exchange information about the state of the art of media-psychological research in various European countries. Therefore, one goal of the second meeting of European media psychologists was to make an inventory of the media-psychological research conducted in Europe. The meeting was held at the beautiful conference site of the Werner Reimers-Stiftung in Bad Homburg, from March 15 to 17, 1993 Front Matter....Pages I-VI Recent Trends in European Media Psychology....Pages 1-10 An Audience-Based Approach to Assessing Programme Quality....Pages 11-34 Parasocial Interaction with People on the Screen....Pages 35-55 Changing Audiences for Changing Media: A Social Psychological Perspective....Pages 56-72 The Contribution of Media Psychology to User-Friendly Computers: A Proposal for Cooperative Work....Pages 73-86 Effects of Extremely Violent Audiovisual Products on Young People’s Aggressive Behavior and Emotional Reactions....Pages 87-104 Violence in TV News: The Cultivation of Emotions....Pages 105-115 Psychophysiological Methods in Media Research....Pages 116-124 The Socio-Emotional Dimension of Using Screen Media.
