Knowledge of the peripheral nervous system is important in all fields of medicine. Since antiquity, humankind has been interested in the nerves of the body and how they affect function, and over time, our rudimentary understanding of the nervous system has developed into advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and disease. The nerves of the body continue to be a topic of extreme interest. Yet, few texts have delved into a detailed examination of the peripheral nerves as a whole, with most being very discipline-specific. Of the many historical publications on the peripheral nerves, one book stands out in our minds, Sir Sydney Sunderland’s Nerves and Nerve Injuries. Published over three decades ago, this tome is still used by those with interest in the field. Our original goal was to update the second edition of Sir Sidney’s book. However, we quickly realized that, given the leaps in knowledge on the peripheral nerves over almost 40 years, we could not simply add on to an established textbook. Therefore, we planned the current publication as a single, authoritative, standalone reference on the peripheral nerves, with topics running the gamut from the basic science of nerves to the clinical diagnosis of lesions in these structures. Although a single book of this nature cannot cover every single topic in the field, we have attempted to illustrate the intricacies of the peripheral nervous system by offering an exhaustive list of chapters devoted to form, function, and more. For example, not only can readers find chapters detailing the neuroanatomy of nerves, but they can also read content that addresses new information regarding neural interfaces, stem cells, medical and surgical treatments, and medical-legal issues following nerve injury. To this end, we invited authors from around the world with expertise in the peripheral nervous system to contribute to this textbook. Nerves and Nerve Injuries is the first comprehensive work devoted to the nerves of the body. An indispensable work for anyone studying the nerves or treating patients with nerve injuries, these books will become the ‘go to’ resource in the field. The nerves are treated in a systematic manner, discussing details such as their anatomy (both macro- and microscopic), physiology, examination (physical and imaging), pathology, and clinical and surgical interventions. The authors contributing their expertise are international experts on the subject. The books cover topics from detailed nerve anatomy and embryology to cutting-edge knowledge related to treatment, disease and mathematical modeling of the nerves.

Nerves and Nerve Injuries Volume 1 focuses on the history of nerves, embryology, anatomy, imaging, and diagnostics. This volume provides a greatly detailed overview of the anatomy of the peripheral and cranial nerves as well as comprehensive details of imaging modalities and diagnostic tests.

  • Detailed anatomy of the peripheral and cranial nerves including their history and ultrastructure
  • Comprehensive details of the imaging modalities and diagnostic tests used for viewing and investigating the nerves
  • Authored by leaders in the field around the globe – the broadest, most expert coverage available
