This work is to be understood from the systematic perspective as an extension of John Rawl’s __Theory of Justice__ . Constituting a normative vanishing-point, the individual’s moral self-respect is placed at the centre of the theory’s justification. Starting from the thesis that self-respect presents itself as the highest good, the book defends a number of fundamental moral rights that need to be realized legally, economically, culturally, and politically so that a person can maintain her self-respect. Moralische Selbstachtung wird dazu – in Auseinandersetzung mit Kant – als ein rechtsgebundenes Selbstverhältnis gedeutet, das nicht nur den motivationalen Grund praktischer Identität bereitstellt, sondern sich darüber hinaus als normativer Fluchtpunkt einer selbstachtungsfunktionalen Gerechtigkeitstheorie anbietet. Ausgehend von der postrawlsschen These, dass Selbstachtung einen unüberbietbaren Wert darstellt, werden eine Reihe moralischer Grundrechte verteidigt, die rechtlich, ökonomisch, kulturell und politisch realisiert sein müssen, damit eine Person ihre Selbstachtung aufrechterhalten kann. Systematisch mündet diese Erörterung in die Konzeption einer sozialliberalen Gerechtigkeitstheorie, deren transnationaler Geltungsbereich abschließend als subsidiärer Kosmopolitismus beschrieben wird.
