Mind, body, and society : life and mentality in colonial Bengal

Contributed papers of series of lectures and seminars organized by the Department of History, Presidency College and Calcutta University, on the occasion of the birth centenary of Prof. Kuruvila Zachariah. This book explores the various levels of mentality in a colonial society, especially with regard to gender, sex, and the young. The authors address the experiences of children at school and adolescents at college, as well as the confrontations of Bhadralok, Baul, and Mullah, and the muted voices of women in purdah.
