Medieval and early colonial Assam : society, polity, economy

Prominent historian Dr. Amalendu Guha traces the history of medieval and early colonial Assam from different dimensions. It covers the geography behind history, the historiographical perspective and land rights and social classes in Assam. It describes how Assam transitioned from tribalism to feudalism, the crisis that emerged in Assam's feudalism and the subsequent rise of colonialism. Agrarian concerns have also been highlighted as important aspects of Assam's history, from the rice economy and the Tai migration to agrarian structures in the late nineteenth century and the imperialism of opium.
