Measurement of Quarkonium Polarization to Probe QCD at the LHC (Springer Theses)

معرفی کتاب «Measurement of Quarkonium Polarization to Probe QCD at the LHC (Springer Theses)» نوشتهٔ Knünz, Valentin، منتشرشده توسط نشر Springer International Publishing : Imprint : Springer در سال 2017. این کتاب در 8 صفحه، فرمت epub، زبان انگلیسی ارائه شده است.

In the second, revised edition of a well-established textbook, the author strikes a balance between quantitative rigor and intuitive understanding, using a lively, informal style. The first chapter provides a detailed historical introduction to the subject, while subsequent chapters offer a quantitative presentation of the Standard Model. A simplified introduction to the Feynman rules, based on a "toy" model, helps readers learn the calculational techniques without the complications of spin. It is followed by accessible treatments of quantum electrodynamics, the strong and weak interactions, and gauge theories. New chapters address neutrino oscillations and prospects for physics beyond the Standard Model. The book contains a number of worked examples and many end-of-chapter problems. A complete solution manual is available for instructors. This thesis discusses in detail the measurement of the polarizations of all S-wave vector quarkonium states in LHC proton-proton collisions with the CMS detector. Heavy quarkonium states constitute an ideal laboratory to study non-perturbative effects of quantum chromodynamics and to understand how quarks bind into hadrons. The experimental results are interpreted through an original phenomenological approach, which leads to a coherent picture of quarkonium production cross sections and polarizations within a simple model, dominated by one single color-octet production mechanism. These findings provide new insights into the dynamics of heavy quarkonium production at the LHC, an important step towards a satisfactory understanding of hadron formation within the standard model of particle physics. It is always a little artificial to pinpoint such things, but I'd say that elementary particle physics was born in 1897, with J. J. Thomson's discovery of the electron. Introduction.- Quarkonium Physics.- Experimental Setup.- Data Analysis.- Discussion of Results.- Conclusions.
