Doody Review Services Reviewer: Carole Ann Kenner, DNS, MSN, BSN(Northeastern University Bouve College of Health Sciences) Description: This book presents measurement instruments in the areas of self-efficacy and self-care, coping, social support, and quality of life. The intent is to provide vehicles for outcome assessment, testing of these measurements, and advancement of nursing knowledge. The previous editions of this series of books were published between 1988 and 1990. Purpose: According to the authors, the major purposes of this book are to keep client-focused nursing instruments easily accessible to those who need to use them; update some of the instruments that appeared in the original volumes by providing additional psychometric information, and encourage the dissemination of other nursing measures that are useful to the practice of nurse clinicians and researchers. The objectives, important ones to the advancement of the profession, are met. Audience: The readership of this book is primarily researchers, graduate students, and practicing nurses who are interested in improvement of the assessment of client outcomes. The authors are well known, well respected authorities in the area of measurement and outcomes based research. Features: Four areas of outcomes are presented: self-efficacy and self-care, coping, social support, and quality of life. These areas are not exhaustive of every instrument known, but present the most complete information possible on selected ones. The contributors are from across the country and are known experts in the four topical areas in their own right, adding to the credibility of the book. Each instrument is presented with the purpose, conceptual framework, procedures for development, description, reliability and validity, conclusion, and recommendations for further testing, and references that support the development and testing. This approach helps the reader to determine if the instrument fits with their desired application and to fully understand the theoretical underpinnings of the instrument. Assessment: There is no direct competition for this book. This book presents material in a user-friendly, easy to understand format. Other books on measurement or outcomes do not offer the depth of information on specific instruments or the instrument itself -- the final section of each instrument presentation. This second edition presents updated information on the instrument, further evidence of reliability and validity, and additional testing that has been done to support the concepts.
