Contributing to feminist approaches to masculinities, this book examines men's contextual experiences of masculine identity. Drawing on new data which compares men as they move across and between public and domestic spaces, it explores the implications of this for the nature of contemporary masculinity. This book makes a unique contribution to contemporary feminist work on masculinities by considering individual men's contextual experiences of masculine identity. By drawing on new data which compares performances of masculinity as men move across and between public and domestic spaces, the volume explores the implications of this for the nature of masculinity itself. This is achieved through an exploration of the differently gendered occupations of hairdressing, estate agency and firefighting. The book uses an original format consisting of three theory chapters on masculinity in transition, the body and embodiment and intimacy and the emotions. These are used to contextualise data chapters on home and work, the life course, sexuality, men's friendships and intimacy, a spatio-temporal approach to embodiment and the research process itself, amongst others. It therefore contributes new theorising and empirical evidence on masculinities which will be of interest to readers from a wide variety of disciplines Cover......Page 1 Contents......Page 8 Preface and Acknowledgements......Page 9 1 Meeting Men on the Move......Page 12 Part I: Transitions......Page 26 2 Masculinity and Transition......Page 28 3 Home and Work in Historical Context......Page 48 4 Continuities, Conflicts and Contradictions......Page 57 5 Masculinities in Prospect: The Life Course and Chronology......Page 67 6 Belonging: Scrutiny, Irony and Performance......Page 75 Part II: Embodiment......Page 86 7 Embodiment: Masculinity and the Body......Page 88 8 'I'm a Suit Man': Embodying Occupational Masculinities......Page 110 9 The Sociable Body......Page 118 10 The Performing Body......Page 128 11 Embodying Mundane and Life Course Transitions......Page 139 Part III: Emotionality, Masculinity and Gender......Page 150 12 Masculinity and Emotionality......Page 152 13 Emotional Labour Revisited......Page 170 14 Sharing Emotion: Men's Experience of Vulnerability......Page 180 15 Men and Friendship......Page 189 16 Emotionality and the Research Process......Page 198 17 Undoing Gender/Gender Undone......Page 207 References......Page 219 Index......Page 229 Meeting men on the move Transitions: Masculinities and transition Home and work in historical context Continuities, conflicts and contradictions Masculinities in prospect: The life course and chronology Belonging: scrutiny, irony and performance Embodiment: Masculinity and the body 'I'm a suit man': embodying occupational masculinities The sociable body The performing body Embodying mundane and life course transitions Emotionality, masculinity and gender: Masculinity and emotionality Emotional labour revisited Sharing emotion: men's experience of vulnerability Men and friendship Emotionality and the research process Undoing gender/gender undone.
