Manual of Skin Diseases of the Dog and Cat 2nd edition provides a valuable asset to the practice library for quick and easy reference on a busy day. Dealing with all common skin diseases in both the dog and the cat, particular attention is paid to the differences between the two species. Each chapter looks at a different type of skin disease with descriptions of clinical presentations and a guide for diagnostic tests for each. This book is a combined update of two of Sue Paterson’s books Skin Diseases of the Dog and Skin Diseases of the Cat into one volume for ease of reference. As skin problems represent a high proportion of the caseload seen by veterinary practitioners, this book will prove useful on a daily basis. It will help you to manage common diseases, as well as identify those requiring specialist care. Key features: Particular emphasis is placed on those diagnostic techniques available to the veterinarian within a general practice environment. Provides a practical approach to diagnosis and management. Contains almost 500 colour photographs of common and rare skin conditions. Doody Review Services Reviewer: Karen L Campbell, DVM, MS, DACVIM, DACVD(University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine) Description: Each of the 21 chapters in this manual focuses on a different topic in small animal dermatology. The second edition combines information previously separated into a canine-only book published in 1998 and a feline-only book published in 2000. Purpose: The purpose is to provide busy veterinary practitioners with a practical approach to the diagnosis and management of the most common skin diseases of dogs and cats. These objectives are worthwhile because diseases affecting the skin and ears are among the most common problems requiring medical management in a busy practice setting. Audience: The book is intended for use by veterinarians in general small animal practice, veterinary students, veterinary nurses and technicians, and groomers and breeders of dogs and cats. It is an excellent book for all of these groups, although veterinary students should also use a more in-depth book to gain a greater understanding of the pathological basis of the diseases. The author worked in a veterinary specialty practice for over 15 years and holds two diplomas and specialty board certification in veterinary dermatology. Features: Beginning with an introduction to the structure and function of the skin, the book then moves to general guidelines to approaching dermatology cases and a review of applicable diagnostic tests. Subsequent chapters focus on the various categories of skin diseases (bacterial, fungal, parasitic, and so forth). Approximately 500 excellent color photographs illustrate the diseases in each chapter, which is important since visualization aids in recognition of the diseases. Another helpful feature is the index which makes it easy to find diseases of interest (for example, feline paraneoplastic alopecia is discussed in the chapter on neoplasia rather than the one on alopecia). A minor shortcoming of the book is its paucity of references, but this is to be expected in a book that is designed as a clinical manual rather than a textbook. Assessment: Veterinary dermatology is a rapidly changing field which warrants frequent updates. This edition will be a useful reference for veterinary practitioners and technicians. The author has included a wider variety of diseases than found in an otherwise similar book, Small Animal Dermatology: A Color Atlas and Therapeutic Guide , 2nd edition, Medleau and Hnilica (Elsevier, 2006). However, that book provides more detailed treatment information, therefore I recommend that both of these be used as references to small animal dermatological diseases. The most comprehensive small animal dermatology textbook is Muller & Kirk's Small Animal Dermatology , 6th edition, Scott et al. (Elsevier, 2001).
