There is a definite need for a good, concise portable manual. The editor and authors have succeeded in this. Audience: According to the author, this book is geared primarily toward students and housestaff., but the manual's detail and content make it useful for an even broader audience. Internists and family physicians can use this book to update their knowledge of this rapidly changing field and answer clinical questions encountered in daily practice. It is a good reference even for physicians doing subspecialty training in hematology. The references at the end of each chapter provide good direction for further reading. Most references are primary sources, original journal articles. Features: The manual covers both benign and malignant conditions in hematology. Disorders of each of the hematopoetic cell lines are reviewed. Most topics are introduced with a review of the basic pathophysiology and biochemistry, which is quite detailed. Clinical presentations, diagnostic methods, and treatment options are discussed. Chapters on leukemia include the most recent updated classifications. Hemostasis and coagulation is not forgotten. There is also a detailed chapter on transfusion medicine, which is very practical. New to this edition is a basic introduction to bone marrow transplantation. Important information is summarized well in tables. Most chapters include figures and tables. The one feature this book lacks is a color atlas. Just a few photographs would be necessary to round out an otherwise excellent resource. Assessment: It is quite a task to put together a comprehensive manual of hematology in a spiral bound format that is portable. This book accomplishes that quite well. The new edition includes updates from discoveries at the molecular/genetic level to summaries of everchanging advances in treatment. This manual is a valuable resource for physicians at all levels. It can be a good introduction to the field or a concentrated review.
