John Locke's Two Treatises of Government, originally published anonymously, is a work of political philosophy that begins by attacking patriarchalism, specifically that of Robert Filmer's Patriarcha. Having aptly refuted patriarchalism, a competing contemporary theory of his time, Locke moves on to outline an ideal theory of politics and society that responds to the political theory of Thomas Hobbes, another contemporary. Both Hobbes and Locke agree that the state of nature is one of chaos and competition; Locke moves on to outline the way in which we bring order to this state of nature through certain nature rights and contracts to each other. These essays form the body of work that contributed to Locke's status as a figure ahead among political theorists.About the Author [C:\Users\Microsoft\Documents\Calibre Library] This is the revised version of Peter Laslett's acclaimed edition of Two Treatises of Government, which is widely recognised as one of the classic pieces of recent scholarship in the history of ideas, read and used by students of political theory throughout the world. He argued that political societies exist to defend the lives, liberties, and properties of their citizens, and that no government has any authority except by the consent of the people. When rulers become tyrants and act against the common good, then the people have a right of revolution against them. Writing against the backdrop of Charles II's savage purge of the Whig movement, Locke set out to attack monarchical absolutism and demolished the intellectual fabric of the divine right of rulers.
