It offers critical reflection, from a range of disciplinary perspectives, on the relation of art and regeneration. Whilst recent research and thought has focussed on such issues within metropolitan cities, here represented by Paris, Barcelona, Liverpool and Montpelier, this book also provides insights into the opportunities and problems of the non-metropolitan city. The contributions investigate the strategies employed by artists to intervene in urban futures through innovative projects in non-gallery settings. As British cities lose the cultural connections with their industrial past, many seek to build new postindustrial futures through urban regeneration. Art projects play a key role in policymaking that aims to regenerate neglected neighbourhoods. This study focuses particularly on the ways in which newlydeveloped cultural institutions tend to be flagships for regeneration the Tate Modern in Southwark is one such example. "What does it mean for space to be public?-the space of a city, building, exhibition, institution or work of art?"
