Doody Review Services Reviewer: Carole Ann Kenner, DNS, MSN, BSN(Northeastern University Bouve College of Health Sciences) Description: This book is designed to serve as a quick reference for nursing practice problems and common conditions. The last edition was published in 2003. Purpose: The purpose is to present comprehensive assessment and nursing management information. The book is meant to serve as a quick, easy-to-use reference complete with cross-references to major conditions. These worthy objectives are met. Audience: The intended audience is practicing nurses and student nurses. The author is credible. Features: The lifespan is covered. Where appropriate, alerts are included for elderly and pediatric patients. Concerns for childbearing or pregnant women are included in a separate section. The format is unique in that information can be found either from the table of contents according to conditions or cross-referencing from one disorder to another. Key points are highlighted and shown in boxed format to call attention to emergency situations or drug alerts. Assessment: This new edition includes information on SARS and emerging infections -- not found in most competing books. These additions more than justify the new edition. The Illustrated Manual of Nursing Practice (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2002), is a comprehensive and large text that certainly does a better job of showing care principles than this one does. However, this is a very good quick reference with up-to-date information and would make a nice addition to a nurse's library.
