Linguistic Method: Essays in Honor of Herbert Penzl (Janua linguarum)

A collection of essays on historical method, the last written in Latin with Ciceronian cadences, may not seem appropriate for review in a journal devoted to computational linguistics. Yet several of the essays deal with methods pertinent for synchronic analysis, as those noted here may indicate.The editors have arranged the essays under four topics: I. Linguistic Concepts (pp. 27-160), II. Linguistic Stratums (161-284), III. Linguistic Systems (285-493) and IV. Linguistic Attitudes (495-615). Essays have separate bibliographies. A selected bibliography of Penzl's publications (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18), an essay on linguistic method by Rauch (19-23) and an index (619-630) complete the work.Well-prepared and presented, the book as a whole, as well as Rauch's essay, testify to the affection for Penzl and to the respect for his achievements. Mit der GERMANIA SACRA werden Handbücher zur Geschichte der alten deutschen Reichskirche (bis 1803/6 ) geschaffen. Das gesamte verfügbare gedruckte und ungedruckte Quellenmaterial sowie die Literatur der deutschen Bistümer, Domkapitel, Kollegiat- und Pfarrkirchen, Klöster und sonstigen kirchlichen Institutionen wird hier aufgearbeitet. Die Gliederung erfolgt nach den Bistümern und Erzbistümern.

Die Handbücher sind im wesentlichen einheitlich angelegt und enthalten folgende Kapitel: 1. Quellen, Literatur und Denkmäler, 2. Archiv und Bibliothek, 3. Historische Übersicht, 4. Verfassung, 5. Religiöses und geistiges Leben, 6. Besitz, 7. Personallisten.

Die enge Verbindung von Kirche und Welt im Mittelalter und in der frühen Neuzeit und die Tatsache, dass die schriftlichen Quellen bis zum Spätmittelalter fast ausschließlich aus geistlicher Hand kommen, machen die GERMANIA SACRA zur Grundlage der Kirchengeschichte, der politischen Reichs- und Landesgeschichte und der Wirtschafts- und Bildungsgeschichte.

Mit dem Abschluss von Band 37, 4: Das Bistum Münster, Die Diözese liegt erstmals die komplette Beschreibung einer Diözese (Münster) von ihrer Gründung bis zu ihrer Aufhebung in der Säkularisation 1803 vor.

Herbert Penzl, born in Neufelden, Austria, on September 2, 1910, received his Ph.D. from the University of Vienna in 1935, and joined the Faculty of Rockford College in 1936, the University of Illinois in 1938, the University of Michigan in 1950, and the University of California at Berkeley in 1963. His pioneer work in the discipline of LINGUISTIC METHOD and lifetime fosterage of that discipline are celebrated by this birthday volume presented in his honor.
