In the Buddhist Tibetan schools young people would be compelled to sit on the ground in front of the gate, without food or water for many days before being admitted into the school. This did not occur because the priests wanted to punish or torture the seeker, but to ensure that they understood how challenging the pathway would be. Despite completing this difficult task, many left the school after a few months or years, because of the constant pressure of learning and the sacrifices this entailed. This basic pattern occurred in all Mystery Schools. In Scotland, the ancient schools were generally located up in the northern Islands or well into the cold and remote mountains. Just travelling the highland roads through desolate mountains and deep glens was a challenge. However, if the seeker managed to find one of the Great Halls, they would be required to serve an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships these days tend to be associated with trades and physical skills. The practice of apprenticeship actually began in the Mystery Schools of Ireland, Scotland and Wales. In ancient times a young person would pledge his or her allegiance as an apprentice to a Master in order to learn the wisdom ways of Mastery. Their motives were probably based on wanting to gain personal power over themselves and others. However, if they truly wished to serve humanity they also knew that these magical powers were to be used for the good of all. Over time, their motives would be uncovered by the clever and wise wizards. Certain tests would be given that would clarify the true desires and determination of the young apprentices. The wisdom ways were not generally called magic by the priests and wizards. Instead they were called The Keys and referenced the fact that as the student grew in the teachings of The Great hall, he or she would be given a key to a door of one of the master teachers chambers. These physical keys unlocked the wisdom held sacrosanct in the Great Halls and in their locked volumes of Mystery Books. The Wisdom Books were usually bound in leather and locked securely with a little brass padlock. Inside, the book was embellished with dragons, flowers and various magical symbols and always hand written on vellum or various parchments. The contents contained secrets, spells or incantations, usually written in copperplate calligraphy. To the uninitiated these beautifully bound books would appear to be magical and sometimes frightening spell books and of little consequence spiritually. However, the spells were actually codes for the deeper wisdom explored here. The Mystery Schools have existed in every corner of the world, and whilst their teachings align with various cultural concerns, there are some fundamental and universal wisdom teachings that are common to them all. In this book the author gathers the corn wisdom from the Asian, European, African and North American Mystery Schools and condenses it into simplistic and modern phraseology.
