Creating the Qur'an presents the first systematichistorical-critical study of the Qur'an's origins, drawing onmethods and perspectives commonly used to study other scripturaltraditions. Demonstrating in detail that the Islamic traditionrelates not a single attested account of the holy text's formation,Stephen J. Shoemaker shows how the Qur'an preserves a surprisinglydiverse array of memories regarding the text's early history andits canonization. To this he adds perspectives from radiocarbondating of manuscripts, the linguistic history of Arabic, the socialand cultural history of late ancient Arabia, and the limitations ofhuman memory and oral transmission, as well as variouspeculiarities of the Qur'anic text itself. Considering all therelevant data to present the most comprehensive and convincingexamination of the origin and evolution of the Qur'an available,Shoemaker concludes that the canonical text of the Qur'an was mostlikely produced only around the turn of the eighth century.

This book will provide instructors with a collection of carefully selected, introduced, and annotated materials from contemporary non-Islamic records that can be set alongside of the Qur'an and later Islamic materials. Written in many languages-not just Greek and Latin, but Syriac, Georgian, Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopic, Hebrew, and Arabic-these texts span the extent of early medieval Christendom, reaching from England and Spain in the west to Egypt and Iran in the east. Ideal for the classroom and the personal library, this book will have a major, sustained impact on the fields in which we publish"-- Provided by publisher Cover 1 Title 6 Copyright 7 Dedication 8 Contents 10 Acknowledgments 12 Introduction 18 1.
