Les chapiteaux romans de Bourgogne: Themes et programmes (Culture & Sociaetae Maediaevales)

In the 11th and 12th centuries, churches in Burgundy saw an extraordinary development in decorated capitals. This detailed study of the themes and iconographic programmes seen on more than 500 capitals looks at the significance of this figuration, the types of themes depicted and their distribution. Both human and animal figures were carved onto capitals including monsters, dragons, physical and spiritual combat, scenes from the Bible and the lives of saints.
