"This books provides an introduction to three contemporary syntactic theories, Government-Binding Theory, Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar, and Lexical-Functional Grammar. In successive chapters, Sells lucidly presents and illustrates the fundamental apsects of each theory. In an introductory chapter he describes the basic syntactic concepts and assumptions shared by each theory; in the postscript, Thomas Wasow provides a more general overview of the different perspectives of these three approaches."--Publisher's description The material presented is based on the notes from a series of lectures given at the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1985. The three theories discussed here are the ones about which the author has enough knowledge to discuss seriously. Along with describing each theory's most important aspects, these discussions are limited to the purely syntactic aspects of the theories. Ross presents each theory in the formulation that is internally consistent, while explaining the concepts and motivations of the theory, but remaining accessible to the non-specialist. Syntactic theories change rapidly, so this series of lectures does not encompass all the recent developments in the field Peter Sells ; Postscript By Thomas Wasow. This Second Printing Incorporates Several Minor Changes Of Text And References--author's Pref. Includes Indexes. Pages [225]-228 Publishers's List. Bibliography: P. [209]-215.
