Le devin historien en Mésopotamie propose une approche simultanée de la divination et de l’histoire, deux domaines dont les devins furent les bâtisseurs. Ils s’y révélèrent de grands herméneutes, usant de la sémiologie pour identifier les signes, qu’ils perçurent comme des signes d’écriture, et de l’herméneutique (ils étaient formés à la pensée hypothético-déductive) pour en découvrir les multiples sens. À distance du réel, ils firent pénétrer leurs interlocuteurs dans l’univers du possible. La divination investiguant le passé, le présent et l’avenir, elle était préoccupée par l’histoire, qu’elle mettait en rapport avec la nature et le cosmos. En 1946, Jean Nougayrol comptait 106 présages historiques, duplicatas compris. À ce jour, la liste s’en élève à 385, duplicatas exclus. Diviners perceived omens as potentially rich in various meanings and cultivated an elaborate hermeneutic for working these out using hypothetical and inductive reasoning. Even if omens were removed from the recorded facts, diviners endowed them with a wide range of possibilities. Divination sought to establish links among historical, cosmic, and natural events because it investigated at once the past, present, and future.
