Le sujet annoncé par ce titre 1 est vaste et difficile: parler du langage est sans doute à la mode, mais une grande science serait nécessaire pour en parler justement. Si je voulais donner par mes premières phrases une image du sujet que je vais aborder, je commencerais ainsi mon discours: " ce que je voudrais dire, Je ne peux pas le dire. J'ai l'émotion d'une expérience, mais les mots sont incapables de la communiquer. Seul le silence, etc., etc .... » Pour moi, il ne s'agit pas, évidemment, d'une expérience religieuse, mais, en un certain sens, d'une expérience tout de même, d'une expérience d'ordre littéraire: en lisant et en relisant les textes des Pères Grecs, en me mettant à l'écoute de leur· écriture, il m'est arrivé d'entendre, sous leur langage, un autre langage; de deviner, dans leur mots et leur phrases, un autre message que l'objet apparent de leur discours: des signes, des renvois à moitié dits à autre chose, un paysage de symboles ... j'ai cru recevoir l'écho d'une parole qui n'est pas toujours, ni seulement, énoncé théologique ou recherche exégétique, mais parfois parole pathétique, ou poétique. C'est cela dont je voudrais parler. Mais comment le faire? Les mots mêmes que je viens d'employer, - le langage, mon discours, une expérience à communiquer, les textes, leur écriture et la lecture que j'en fais, les signes, le dit et le non-dit, les symboles, la poésie ... -, tous ces mots ·renvoient à la science impressionante de la linguistique ... Ce que je vais écrire sera donc maladroit: un résumé de longu.es ~alys~s de. textes, l'ébauche d'une recherche, un aperçu, - app~oxunatif, faIble, lnsuffisant - un texte dont je dois commencer par ruer la valeur, tout en l'élaborant. "The project to write this collection of stories started when the Franklin Branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists was approached by the Franklin Business and Professional Women who were organising an event to mark the 125th anniversary of the right for women to vote. They asked if we could find any descendants of the women who signed the 1893 petition. As it happened, if there was ever a petition from the Franklin area it did not survive. Legislation was passed on 19 September 1893 and the first election that women could vote in was held on 28 November 1893, a mere 10 weeks later. The branch decided to use this first roll to identify those women of Franklin who had enrolled to vote and to write their stories.
