Being asked to write, as someone embedded in African culture, about my views and perception of knowledge, I think it is most efficient to present them largely in the form of an account of my personal experiences of being confronted with others having and acquiring knowledge, bestowing it on me, and of myself bestowing my acquired knowledge on others. This volume compares the western ideas of knowledge with the African. It aims at creating a mirror through which the western knowledge culture can look at itself through an unusual and interesting angle. The culture of Sub-Saharan Africa is the substance from which we, in this book, have tried to construe an epistemological mirror.
