Pune, Deccan College, Post-graduate & Research Institute, 1985. — 139 p. Khasi belongs to the Khasic (Khasian) branch of the Mon-Khmer language family (Austro-Asiatic macro-family). It is closely related to Pnar (Jaintia, Synteng), War, Amwi, Bhoi and Lyngngam. It is spoken by ca. 865.000 people primarily in the Meghalaya state of India, but also in bordering areas of Assam and Bangladesh. Since 2005 Khasi is associate official language in Meghalaya. Formerly (first half of the 19th century) the language was written in Assamese script, later and presently in Latin alphabet. The online newspaper U Mawphor (www.mawphor.com) is published in the Khasi language. Unfortunately, in the present copy there is only one of the ten final texts because the last pages (maybe a dozen) are missing.
