"Between 1801 and the First World War the population of the Borough of Reading increased almost tenfold, simultaneously with the growth of new industries. The authorities responded by delineating new streets and encouraging development in districts springing up mainly to the east, south and west beyond the original market town. The Borough's Highways Committee, helped by legislation, played a major role in managing and guiding these activities, especially in the later part of the nineteenth century. Large number of bricks burnt from local clays were used to build houses, shops, schools, chapels and churches required in these new suburbs, but the making of the streets called for the procurement of stone from far and wide. This volume discusses the geological features, spatial distribution and geographic sources (such as south Oxfordshire, Wales, Leicestershire and as far away as Norway) of the types of stone used for road construction in Reading in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries."--Publisher's web site Front Cover Title Page Copyright Table of Contents List of Figures List of Tables Foreword Abstract Acknowledgements CHAPTER ONE PRELIMINARY MATTERS CHAPTER TWO SARSEN STONE CHAPTER THREE PENNANT SANDSTONE CHAPTER FOUR CAITHNESS FLAGSTONE SERIES CHAPTER FIVE GRANITES CHAPTER SIX GRANODIORITE-TONALITE CHAPTER SEVEN GABBRO CHAPTER EIGHT CONCRETE CHAPTER NINE COLEY DISTRICT CHAPTER TEN EARLEY RISE DISTRICT CHAPTER ELEVEN EAST-CENTRAL READING DISTRICT CHAPTER TWELVE KATESGROVE DISTRICT CHAPTER THIRTEEN NEW TOWN DISTRICT CHAPTER FOURTEEN NORTH READING DISTRICT CHAPTER FIFTEEN NORTHWEST READING (EAST) DISTRICT CHAPTER SIXTEEN NORTHWEST READING (WEST) DISTRICT CHAPTER SEVENTEEN PARK DISTRICT CHAPTER EIGHTEEN REDLAND DISTRICT CHAPTER NINETEEN SOUTHWEST READING (EAST) DISTRICT CHAPTER TWENTY READING SOUTHWEST (WEST) DISTRICT CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE THE GROWTH OF READING’S STREETS: AN OVERVIEW REFERENCES APPENDIX I THE STREETS OF NINETEENTH- AND EARLY TWENTIETH-CENTURY READING ARRANGED BY DISTRICT APPENDIX II ADOPTION OF STREETS IN READING APPENDIX III CONTRACTORS TO THE HIGHWAYS COMMITTEE APPENDIX IV THE STREETS OF NINETEENTH- AND EARLY TWENTIETH-CENTURY READING ARRANGED BY KERB LITHOLOGY APPENDIX V A SHORT KERB WALKING-TRAIL IN EAST READING Between 1801 and the First World War the population of the Borough of Reading increased almost tenfold, simultaneously with the growth of new industries.
