Journal of a Visit to London and the Continent by Herman Melville, 1849-1850

In 1849, Melville took a short trip to England and the Continent, primarily to market his new book, White Jacket. His delightful journal of that trip is here published for the first time. It is full of vivid anecdotes, humorous comments on people and events, and characteristic social criticism. The book includes letters by and to Melville and a reproduction of the earliest known likeness of him, all heretofore unpublished.
