Newman himself called the __Oxford University Sermons__, first published in 1843, `the best, not the most perfect, book I have done'. He added, `I mean there is more to develop in it'. Indeed, the book is a precursor of all his major later works, including especially the __Essay on the Development____of Christian Doctrine__ and the __Grammar of Assent__. Dealing with the relationship of faith and reason, the fifteen sermons represent Newman's resolution of the conflict between heart and head that so troubled believers, non-believers, and agnostics of the nineteenth century, Their controversial nature also makes them one of the primary documents of the Oxford Movement. This new edition provides an introduction to the sermons, a definitive text with textual variants, extensive annotation, and appendices containing previously unpublished material. "This edition joins the series of critical editions of Cardinal Newman's major works published by Oxford University Press. The book is a direct precursor of all his major later works, including especially the Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine and the Grammar of Assent. The fifteen sermons constitute an early precis of Newman's religious, moral, and educational philosophies. Dealing with the relationship of faith and reason, they represent Newman's resolution of the head-heart conflict that so troubled believers, non-believers, and agnostics of the nineteenth century. Preached to the University between 1826 and 1843, while Newman was at the height of his career in the Church of England, their controversial nature also makes this volume one of the primary documents of the Oxford Movement. Considered as autobiography, the Oxford University Sermons are a proleptic Apologia pro Vita Sua." "The Editors provide an Introduction to the sermons, a definitive text of the 1890 impression of the third edition of 1872, with textual variants, extensive annotation, and appendices including previously unpublished material. The edition was prepared at the Birmingham Oratory using Newman's library and manuscripts."--BOOK JACKET
