## Xl published during this century consists of some brief discussions of his work in India and his contribution to the criminal law. His political and religious thought, though noticed, has not been given the full treatment that it warrants. We are fortunate in that his major political work, Liberty, Equality, Fraternity-which deserves to rank as a classic-was reprinted in 1967. The biography by Leslie Stephen was reissued in 1972. In the present work, I make ample use of the Stephen papers, which contain much material which has never before been published. In the course of my research and writing, I have incurred several debts which it is my pleasure to acknowledge. This study was first undertaken as a dissertation at Columbia University under the guidance of Professor Jacques Barzun. I am deeply grateful for his readings and criticisms. Professor Robert Nisbet was of assistance in reading an early version of the manuscript. Professor Joseph H. Smith, of the Columbia Law School, read the chapter on criminal law and saved me from some errors. I have profited from the discussions on political thought that I have had with my friend Brian Heffernan, who also gave the chapters on politics a critical reading. I wish to thank my father, Alfred Colaiaco, for typing the first draft and for his invaluable assistance in preparing the manuscript for publication. I am also thankful to Dorren Heffernan for typing a draft in record time. I owe a profound debt to the late Professor Arthur M. Wilson, a great scholar and teacher, who will always be a source of inspiration to me. Needless to say, though this book has benefited from the reading and kind suggestions of others, I alone bear responsibility for what errors remain.
