**`**This book is very valuable for the medical imaging scientist and may serve several purposes: as a detailed and relatively complete introduction to a possibly unfamiliar area of medical imaging, and as a source of inspiration for one's own research. While the book is an excellent resource for the imaging scientist, the physician with a technical bent might also benefit from it. This reviewer eagerly awaits the proceedings of the ninth conference.**'****The Journal of Nuclear Medicine, 26:11** Front Matter....Pages I-IX Digital Methods for Change Detection in Medical Images....Pages 1-16 An Approach to Endocardial Boundary Detection from Sequential Real Time Two-Dimensional Echocardiographic Images: Status of the Algorithm and its Validation.....Pages 17-29 Analysis of Dynamic Radionuclide Studies Using Factor Analysis — a new approach....Pages 30-45 Decontamination of Crosstalk in First-Pass Radionuclide Angiocardiography....Pages 46-62 Coded Aperture Tomography Revisited....Pages 63-93 Resolution Limits in Full — and Limited-Angle Tomography....Pages 94-105 New Directions in Coded-Aperture Imaging....Pages 106-129 Preprocessing of Spect Data as a Precursor for Attenuation Correction....Pages 130-150 The Application of Variable Median Window Filtering to Computerised Tomography....Pages 151-168 Art vs. Convolution Algorithms for ECT....Pages 169-184 A Generalized Weighted Backprojection Algorithm for Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography....Pages 185-201 Application of Linear Classifiers to the Recognition of the Temporal Behaviour of the Heart....Pages 202-222 A Comparative Review of Methods of Obtaining Amplitude/Phase and Related Images for Gated Cardiac Studies....Pages 223-237 Rapid Automatic Functional Imaging of the Heart and the Application of Time Images....Pages 238-249 The Normal Heart: Patterns for Various Functional Images Obtained from Radionuclide Gated Equilibrium Studies....Pages 250-265 Fourier Filtering Cardiac Time Activity Curves: Sharp Cutoff Filters....Pages 266-281 Data Processing in Nuclear Ventriculography: Assessing Cardiac Function from Noisy Data....Pages 282-298 The Definition of a Single Measure of Regional Wall Motion Abnormality in Scintigraphic Ventriculography....Pages 299-305 Image Analysis -Topological Methods....Pages 306-342 Some Applications of Hierarchical Image Processing Algorithms....Pages 343-369 Acousto-Optic Deconvolution System for Real-Time Echography....Pages 370-391 A Bayesean Algorithm for Resolution Recovery in Clinical Nuclear Medicine....Pages 392-407 Discriminant Analysis of Exercise Renograms....Pages 408-420 A Stochastic Interpretation of Thallium Myocardial Perfusion Scintigraphy....Pages 421-431 A New Approach for Testing the Significance of Differences Between ROC Curves Measured from Correlated Data....Pages 432-445 Imaging Spatial Distributions of Resistivity Using Applied Potential Tomography — APT....Pages 446-462 An Uncollimated Compton Profile Method for Determination of Osteoporotic Changes in Vertebral Bone Density and Composition....Pages 463-476 Automated Tissue Characterization with NMR Imaging....Pages 477-493 Zonal Parametric Imaging....Pages 494-512 Interactive 3D Display of Medical Images....Pages 513-526 Can We Predict Visual Performance Using a Model of the Human Eye?....Pages 527-543 Unified Analysis of Medical Imaging System SNR Characteristics....Pages 544-559 Back Matter....Pages 561-580 The Information Processing in Medical Imaging Conference is a biennial conference, held alternatively in Europe and in the United States of America. The subject of the conference is the use of computers and mathematics in medical imaging, the evaluation of new imaging techniques, image processing, image analysis, diagnostic decision making and related fields. The conference brings together the top specialists in the field (both scientists and medical doctors) and other participants doing active research on the subject of the conference. The success of a meeting primarily depends on the enthusiasm of the participants. It also greatly depends on the financial support as well as on the personal efforts of the technical staff and collaborators of the organizers. To all who made this conference a success, the members of the organizing committee want to express their sineere thanks. In particular, the organizers want to acknowledge the help received from: De Vice-Voorzitter van de Vlaamse Executieve De Minister van Onderwijs Het Nationaal Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek De Vrije Universiteit Brussel Adac Agfa-Gevaert Bruker Spectrospin Byk Belga Elseint Instituut voor Radioelementen, IRE Nucleobel Solco Sonotron VII TABLE OF CONTENTS Foreword. v A.
