and the audiences of the various conferences and talks at which I had the opportunity to present parts of the material. I would also like to thank Kirsten Brock for the thorough proofreading of the final manuscript. Thanks also to my 'non-linguistic' friends for making me think of other things: in particular Désirée, Martin, Nane, Peer, Peter, and Ulrike, thanks! Parts of chapters 6 to 8 are based on Schmid (1999), Schmid (2000), Schmid (2001), and parts of chapters 7 and 9 are based on Schmid and Vogel (2004). Special thanks go to Ralv for a new view on verb clusters, and for reminding me how interesting they are. The research reported in this book was partly supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft as part of the Graduiertenkolleg Linguistische Grundlagen für die Sprachverarbeitung and as part of the project The Optimality-vi Tanja Schmid Theoretic Syntax of German from a Comparative Germanic Perspective (Grant MU 1444/2-1, Principal Investigators: Gereon Müller, Sten Vikner). I would also like to thank the Sonderforschungsbereich 471 at the Universität Konstanz for employing me and thus giving me the opportunity to revise my dissertation. Finally, many thanks go to my parents and most of all to Wolfgang and Hans Leon, to whom this book is dedicated. IPP constructions have long been problematic for syntactic theory, because a bare infinitive is preferred over the expected past participle. The book shows how the substitution of the past participle by the infinitive in IPP constructions can be captured straightforwardly if constraints are assumed to be violable. The basic idea is that IPP constructions are exceptional because they violate otherwise valid rules of the language. Thus, IPP is a 'last resort' or repair strategy, which is only visible in cases in which the past participle would be 'even worse'. Furthermore, as the choice of Optimality Theory naturally leads to a crosslinguistic account, the book systematically examines and compares infinitival constructions from seven West Germanic languages including Afrikaans, Dutch, German, West Flemish, and three Swiss German dialects."--BOOK JACKET
