From origin stories to contemporary struggles over treaty rights and sovereignty issues. Indian Nations of Wisconsin: Histories of Endurance and Renewal explores Wisconsin's rich Native tradition. This unique volume -- based on the historical perspectives of the state's Native peoples -- includes compact tribal histories of the Ojibwe, Potawatomi. Oneida, Menominee, Mohican, Ho-Chunk, and Brothertown Indians. Author Patty Loew focuses on oral tradition -- stories, songs, the recorded words of Indian treaty negotiators, and interviews -- along with other untapped Native sources, such as tribal newspapers, to present a distinctly different view of history. Elders and tribal historians in each of the Native communities represented here participated in the book's development -- recommending sources, making suggestions, and offering criticism as the book unfolded. Lavishly illustrated with maps and more than ninety photographs. Indian Nations of Wisconsin is indispensible to anyone interested in the region's history and its Native peoples. After a brief overview of the history of Indians in Wisconsin up until the arrival and first conflicts with Europeans, Loew (an enrolled member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe) offers brief histories of twelve groups who have maintained their presence in Wisconsin from the point of European contact up to the present. The histories of the Menominee, Ho-Chunk, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Oneida, Mohican, and Brothertown Indians were written with the input of Tribal elders and seem designed to be noncontroversial. The histories deal with the changing economies of the groups, their dealings with Europeans and the government, and a number of prominent personalities.
