This guide to America's Indian reservations is arranged alphabetically by state. Entries give the name, address, and telephone number of each state or federal reservation. The geographic location, public ceremony or powwow dates, art forms, and other visitor information are provided for many of the tribes listed. Descriptions of the group's origins, the population as of 1908, and notable cultural traditions are sometimes included. Other than ceremony dates little contemporary data is given. The volume lacks detailed maps showing location of reservations in relation to each other. Its index and bibliography are minimal. Arnold Marquis's A Guide to America's Indians (Univ. of Oklahoma Pr., 1974) will be more useful in planning tours of Indian country. Reference Encyclopedia of the American Indian, edited by Barry Klein (Todd, 1986. 4th ed.), gives tribal addresses and organization information.
