IMAM ṬAḤĀWĪ’SINTRODUCTION“I was asked by one of my fellowscholars to write him a book in which I discuss aḥādīth transmitted from theMessengerrelated to law. Such aḥādīth which appear contradictory inthe eyes of heretics and some weak-minded Muslims due to their ignoranceas to which ruling was mentioned first and which was abrogated, andwhich of them must be acted-upon based on the evidence from theArticulate Book and agreed-upon Sunnah. He asked me to arrange thematerial into different sections, and to set down, in each section, therelevant information concerning the aḥādīth present therein. Such as,pointing out which ones were abrogating and which ones were abrogated.In addition to this, to mention the scholars’ interpretation of the aḥādīthand the arguments they advance against each other. Furthermore, tosupport the position which is soundest to me according to the standardsapplied to authenticate such aḥādīth in light of the evidence from the Book,or the Sunnah, or unanimous consensus of the scholars (ijmāʿ) or soundlyestablished (mutawātir) verdicts of the Companions or their Successors(tābiʿūn).
