David Lazzaretti nacque nel 1834 ad Arcidosso, in una Toscana matrigna e madre, terra di indigenza e sfruttamento, più vicina al Medioevo che al Rinascimento. Barrocciaio per necessità, fin da ragazzo venne assalito da febbri e visioni mistiche che lo portarono a elaborare un personalissimo percorso spirituale nel seno della Chiesa cattolica. Il simbolo della sua missione era formato da due C contrapposte con la croce nel mezzo, l'annuncio di un nuovo Cristo in arrivo. La sua predicazione richiamò migliaia di persone tra la Toscana e la Sabina, in una convivenza armoniosa che si rifaceva alle prime comunità cristiane in cui solidarietà, uguaglianza e istruzione erano le fondamenta, e il lavoro in comune un mezzo per elevare lo spirito. Se da una parte fu perseguitato dalla Legge e considerato un pazzo sovversivo, dall'altra l'"uomo del mistero" conquistò seguaci e protettori tra nobili, intellettuali e alti prelati - anche in Francia, dove vennero pubblicati i suoi libri - godendo del sostegno sia di don Bosco sia di Pio IX. Ma il suo messianesimo mise in allerta sia la Chiesa di Roma che il neonato Stato Italiano. Il 18 agosto del 1878 la pallottola di un carabiniere pose fine alla sua esistenza.
