How much I enjoy it. I used to work in a hospital in cardiology, and loved the buzz and excitement of it. I never thought that I would find that in writing full time, which is almost what I am doing. But I love the creation, I love the fact that I can see my own writing develop, and I love the feeling of holding my books in my hands and saying 'I did that'. When somebody reads my work and tells me that they enjoyed it, it just makes my day! What are the most important attributes to remaining sane as a writer? I think for me, because I am quite impatient with myself, it's to keep myself organised and not to be too critical. As a scientist when I was working in a hospital, I always head a deadline. I had 45 minutes with a patient, and I had a list to get through. Every patient's appointment was a deadline. I have had to learn that I cannot bring that attitude with me into my writing life, even if something takes longer than my originally intended plan. But I think that it is only in the last couple of months that I have reached a point where I am relaxed about it, around the time I was finishing the manuscript for the third book and re-editing the last two. I can see now that patience is the only way forward with this journey. I want to release my third book, but I am more willing to take my time to get it exactly as I want it without the need to rush it forwards for publication. You have works available on your site right now, The Loss of Deference and Escaping Life. Both share a conspiracy theme underlying the story. Do you feel drawn to stories with secrets to fathom? I feel drawn to stories where there is something to discover, and something to overcome because something is at risk. I like characters to be in the dark at times, and I am drawn to stories which have a dark and often disturbing atmosphere. A conspiracy is often a great way of creating that. What are you working on right now? I have just finished writing the first draft of my next book. This will, I think, be the most difficult character I have ever portrayed and I have enjoyed writing about her immensely. She has a very complex way of looking at the world, and I cannot wait to unleash her!
