Laird Subject Index Pages 537-546 Estuaries and Fjords have been extensively studied in the past and the choice of this subject for the 1977 Colloquium may appear a little out of line with the tradition. Estuaries and Fjords however play an essential role in man's activities. Connecting the oceans and the inland rivers, they are natural transportation channels. They provide rational sites for harbors and industrial developments and simultaneously natural nursing grounds, rich in nutrients, for marine plants and animals. Estuaries and Fjords, on the other hand, have become increasingly vulnerable, receiving the impact of modern expansion : continuously growing population, production and use of power, manufacture of new and more diversified materials, intensification of transportation and fishing effort. Diversions of rivers, land reclamation, excessive siltation, dredging, dumping of chemical and biological wastes, while creating severe threats on the estuarine environment, have produced continuous, often drastic, modifications calling for further, more extensive, more elaborate and more interdisciplinary research. The perfecting of new equipment, the constitution of more exhaustive data banks, coinciding with the development of mathematical modelling techniques and the intensive use of modern computers, have provided the means of a better understanding of estuarine dynamics
