This volume in the Handbook of Clinical Neurology (Series Editors: Michael J. Aminoff, Department of Neurology, University of California, San Francisco, USA; Fran?§ois Boller, Bethesda, USA; Dick F. Swaab, Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience, Amsterdam, the Netherlands)is the first major account of the human hypothalamus. Part II is system and disease oriented and deals with the clinic, and with the neuropathology, neurobiology and genetics of vascular disorders, disorders of development and growth (including e.g. anencephaly, septo-optic dysplasia and other midline defects), hypothalamic and pineal tumors, infections, neuroimmunological disorders such as neurosarcoidosis, multiple sclerosis, and Langerhans-cell histiocytosis. After the neuropathology of the neurohypophysis has been dealt with, the background of the different forms of diabetes insipidus and other drinking disorders, such as polydipsia and adipsia, inappropriate secretion of vasopressin, and Wolfram syndrome are presented. Eating disorders such as, e.g. Prader-Willi syndrome, anorexia and bulimia nervosa, are presented as typical hypothalamic diseases. Genetic disorders causing a defect in the migration of hypothalamic neurons are the basis of Kallmann syndrome. Sexual differentiation of the brain is related to transsexuality and homo/heterosexuality. v. 1. Disturbances of nervous function. v. 2. Localization in clinical neurology. v. 3. The human hypothalamus: Basic and Clinical Aspects: Neuropathology of the Human Hypothalamus and adjacent brain structures. This volume provides a comprehensive understanding of the human hypothalamus, an extremely complex structure that consists of a large number of very different functional units. It approaches the subject in a way that has not historically existed in standard neuropathological investigations of the human brain. As the hypothalamus was traditionally considered to be a neuroendocrine structure, and hence of little interest to neurologists, this volume explores new findings in the field and the value they bring to the field of neurology. New understandings of the role the hypothalamus plays in memory and attention deficits in the dementias, along with greater evidence that the hypothalamus is related to symptoms and signs in both neurological and psychological disorders provide users in the fields of neuroscience, endocrinology, pediatrics, and psychology with a comprehensive resource on which to base new research and exploration. * A new understanding of the role of the human hypothalamus in neurological disorders * Clinical evidence regarding a plethora of neurological disorders and how they relate to the human hypothalamus * A greater understanding of the direct connection between both neurological and psychological disorders and the role of the hypothalamus in these disorders
