Предусматривалась подвеска под центропланом двух бомб типа SC 1000 весом по 1000 кг или пары топливных баков по 1250 л. Вооружение самолета разрабатывалось в двух вариантах: четыре пушки МК 108 или две пушки МК 108 и две фотокамеры RB 50/18. Первый полет машины Н IXV1 состоялся 1 марта 1944 г. в Геттингене.К концу апреля стало ясно, что двигатели BMW не будут доведены до нужной кондиции к запланированному первому вылету второй машины. В итоге решили установить на самолет двигатели Jumo 004В, имевшие несколько больший диаметр. Машину пришлось в срочном порядке переделывать. 14 апреля 1945 г. американские войска захватили завод в Фридрихсроде. Обнаружилось, что Ho 229V3 был уже практически закончен и подготовлен к испытаниям, Ho 229V4 и Ho 229V5 недостроены, а Ho 229V6 находился в начальной стадии постройки. Кроме того, были готовы узлы для 20 машин. Ho 229V3 был позднее разобран, перевезен в США и тщательно изучался американскими авиационными специалистами. Reaching speeds approaching 800 kph in prototype form, the Horten Ho 229 'Nurflgel' - 'all wing' was one of the most enigmatic aircraft projects to emerge from World War II and is seen, in terms of design, as a precursor of the 'stealth' concept. Developed from a series of tailless Horten glider designs, the Ho 229 was planned as the first of the next-generation jet fighters for the Luftwaffe. Following on from the Messerschmitt Me 262 it was designed as a highspeed, cannon-equipped, all-weather fighter-bomber, heavy fighter, night fighter and reconnaissance aircraft with plans for airfield strike operations over England in late 1944/early 1945. Unlike the Me 262, the distinctive, batshaped Ho 229 was capable of operating from grass airfields and of carrying the same armament as the Messerschmitt jet, but also possessing a range comparable to that of the Arado Ar 234 jet bomber/reconnaissance aircraft. It was also to be fitted with the latest radar and radio systems and a pilot ejector seat. Later plans included long-range bomber designs capable of attacking the east coast of North America.
