Holocene Morphogenesis and Anthropisation of a Semi-Arid Watershed, Gialias River, Cyprus (BAR International)

Interest in studying historical environments expanded quite rapidly parallel to a passion for romantic landscapes in the 19th century and the knowledge of natural resources among the ecologists of the 20th century. From the point of view of geomorphology, this interest has generated a wealth of research on coevolution between relief and human population. Later, with the study of recent sediment deposits in the Mediterranean Basin, the concept of parallel development between the spread of the Oikumene anderosive phenomena has emerged. Since then, numerous and sometimes contradictory studies have highlighted the diversity of the Holocene sedimentation and morphogenic response to human settlement and population growth according to the geographical variety. With the present work, the author contributes to this line of research by studying a semi-arid Mediterranean environment, the island of Cyprus. The work focuses on the Gialias River watershed which extends from the piedmont of the Troodos range to the Eastern Messaoria plains. The goal is to reconstruct the history of the Holocene morphogenesis in connection with the forms and structures of fluvial landscapes. This work is inscribed in a both geomorpholigical and geoarchaeological perspective and adds to recent advances on the evolution of sub-arid and semi-arid environments in the oriental part of the Mediterranean Basin. La sédimentation holocène au sein d'un bassin versant est conditionnée par les variations climatiques, l'utilisation des sols et les héritages géomorphologiques. Les réponses morphogéniques à ces stimuli demeurent peu connues, particulièrement pour les milieux semi-arides. Au cours de ce travail, je me suis attaché à apporter des éléments de réponse à cette problématique par l'étude de l'alluvionnement holocène du Gialias, le principal fleuve de Chypre. Ce travail associant des études géomorphologiques, stratigraphiques, sédimentologiques, magnétiques, micromorphologiques et géochimiques, couplées à un large corpus de datation couvrant l'Holocène a permis de préciser les modalités du transfert solide amont/aval du bassin versant. Les résultats permettent de caractériser l'impact de l'aridité sur le fonctionnement de l'hydrosystème. Ils montrent une adéquation relativement bonne avec les connaissances régionales sur le paléoclimat. Les principales phases de dépôt correspondent aux phases climatiques humides, comme durant l'Holocène ancien. Les caractéristiques détritiques de l'aridité sont plus marquées à partir de 5000 cal B.P. cal. L'impact morphogénique d'évènements climatiques de haute fréquence est aussi mis en évidence vers 8200 B.P. cal., entre 7800-7200 B.P. cal., entre 2800-2600 et durant le Petit Age Glaciaire. Les conséquences des changements environnementaux sur les activités humaines sont mises en évidence ; elles se différencient selon leur position au sein du bassin versant. Le drainage et la mise en culture des plaines alluviales, la mobilité des ports dans la ria durant les périodes du Bronze et du Fer en sont les exemples les plus caractéristiques.
