This is an excellent reference book published in 1997; it is much more history than atlas. The content is clearly organized as the Table of Contents shows. A huge amount of complicated history is served up in small portions. The first half of the book follows Germany as a whole from the Germanic tribes through the centuries of countless earldoms, duchies, electorates, archbishoprics, abbeys and free imperial cities, power struggles, victories and defeats to re-unification. The second half of the book approaches this history from the multiplicity of its constituent parts, the states of today and also former parts such as Alsace and Silesia. The reader can chose which approach is most helpful. In both cases, each section begins with a map drawn for that period, the text is addressed to the non-specialist and the pictures of people and places are delightful
