The Historical Dictionary of the Green Movement focuses on the history and present status of the wide range of issues and organizations that have been subsumed under the current heading of green or environmental activists. Environmental or Green activism has met with a great deal of success in the last three decades, particularly in Europe, where Green parties are key players on the local and national political scene. Most Green parties and activist groups have raised questions about biodiversity, sustainable growth, nuclear safety, ozone depletion, and global warming. They have also rethought crucial concepts such as the relationship between humans and their living environment. All of these themes and more are explained in this dictionary. Additionally, the evolution and popular strategy of prominent historical and contemporary environmental groups such as the Commons, Open Spaces, the Footpaths Preservation Society, and the Sierra Club are detailed in depth. Also featured is the written work of important green authors such as Paul Ehrlich, Garett Hardin, E.F. Schumacher, and Rachel Carson. This book is a helpful introduction to the complex issues that the Green Movement has raised with many years of activism.
Author Biography: Elim Papadakis (Ph.D., London School of Economics) is Professor of Modern European Studies at The Australian National University. He has published numerous books on politics and the environment including Environmental Politics and Institutional Change with Cambridge University Press in 1996.
