Historical Dictionary of Pakistan (Historical Dictionaries of Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East)

معرفی کتاب «Historical Dictionary of Pakistan (Historical Dictionaries of Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East)» نوشتهٔ Shahid Javed Burki، منتشرشده توسط نشر The Scarecrow Press در سال 2006. این کتاب در فرمت pdf، زبان انگلیسی ارائه شده است.

At what point should one begin Pakistan's history? Should one start with August 14, 1947 when Lord Louis Mountbatten administered the oath of office to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan's first Governor General? If we start with August 14 as Pakistan's birthday, it is impossible to tell Pakistan's full story. To really understand the circumstances that resulted in the birth of Pakistan, one has to go much farther back in history. Beyond Jinnah's call for separate states in 1940, and even beyond the elections of 1937, all the way back to the eighth century when Islam first arrived on the Indian sub-continent. This expanded and updated edition provides concise, accurate, dictionary-style entries on the religious, social, political, economic, and cultural events and leaders that contributed to the founding of the Muslim state. Dr. Burki provides a helpful introduction to aid with historical context. The handy chronology and comprehensive bibliography further augment the usefulness of this volume, making it a helpful guide for the new student of Pakistan and quick ready-reference for the experienced scholar. Praise for the first edition: ''...a very useful bibliography... [The introduction]...is a finely crafted essay...provides the user with an insider's view of the emergence of a new nation...a very authoritative and readable source. Recommended for all levels of college and university reference collections.'' --CHOICE Cover Page......Page 1 Title Page......Page 2 ISBN 0810856018......Page 3 Contents......Page 5 Editor’s Foreword......Page 6 Acknowledgments......Page 8 Reader’s Note......Page 9 Acronyms and Abbreviations......Page 10 Map......Page 15 Chronology......Page 16 Introduction......Page 53 LAND AND PEOPLE......Page 55 THE ARIVAL OF ISLAM IN INDIA......Page 57 TOWARD THE DEMAND FOR PAKISTAN......Page 60 A Struggling Democracy, 1947–1958......Page 65 First Military Period, 1958–1971......Page 67 A Populist Interlude, 1971–1977......Page 70 Second Military Rule, 1977–1988......Page 72 Competitive Democracy, 1988–1999......Page 75 Third Military Rule, 1999–?......Page 77 ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT......Page 79 PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES......Page 81 – A –......Page 85 – B –......Page 140 – C –......Page 174 – D –......Page 200 – E –......Page 212 – F –......Page 235 – G –......Page 259 – H –......Page 275 – I –......Page 290 – J –......Page 319 – K –......Page 337 – L –......Page 360 – M –......Page 377 – N –......Page 419 – O –......Page 440 – P –......Page 444 – Q –......Page 478 – R –......Page 485 – S –......Page 500 – T –......Page 530 – U –......Page 555 – V –......Page 563 – W –......Page 564 – Y –......Page 578 – Z –......Page 582 PRIME MINISTERS......Page 589 Bibliography......Page 593 A. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan gained its independence from the United Kingdom on August 14, 1947 and since then it has become the sixth most populous country in the world. Furthermore, Pakistan has the seventh largest army in the world, and is one of eight nations that have declared themselves nuclear powers. Pakistan's tense relations with its neighboring country of India, the recent earthquake that killed tens of thousands of its people, and the trouble it's had with the Taliban are all covered in this third edition of the Historical Dictionary of Pakistan. This extensively expanded and updated edition covers this country's history through a chronology, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and some 500 cross-referenced dictionary entries presenting the more important persons, places, and events as well as salient aspects of the economy, society, culture, and religion.
