A global survey of unknown creatures reported by thousands of eyewitnesses--creatures that have either been verified, refuted, or are still being examined by scientific researchers. Hidden Animals: A Field Guide to Batsquatch, Chupacabra, and Other Elusive Creatures welcomes readers into the fascinating world of cryptozoology--the scientific pursuit of legendary creatures that sometimes reveals hoaxes and sometimes identifies real, previously unknown species. Compiled by Michael Newton, author of the acclaimed Encyclopedia of Cryptozoology, it is the first comprehensive guide covering the crossroads of zoology and folklore written for both the young and the young at heart. Organized by type of creature type, such as giant animals, missing links, and living fossils, Hidden Animals surveys various beings reported and pursued worldwide from ancient times to the present, in every corner of the globe. In the process, it relates classic myths and legends to identified flesh-and-blood animals. Readers will be captivated by both the scientific evidence supporting the existence of specific cryptids and the exposure of notorious frauds or cases of mistaken identity. Nearly 100 entries on the full range of cryptids, organized into categories of types of animals Primary sources, including eyewitness accounts of sightings of undocumented creatures Sketches of reported hidden animals and photographs of real species uncovered in the pursuit of cryptids A "Who's Who" in cryptozoology with brief biographies of major figures in the field A wide-ranging bibliography of print and online resources for further exploration A comprehensive index of animals (real and speculative), people, places, and discoveries Contents......Page 8 Preface......Page 12 Acknowledgments......Page 14 Introduction......Page 16 Giant Fish......Page 20 Giant Lizards......Page 22 Giant Salamanders......Page 24 Giant Snakes......Page 25 Giant Spiders......Page 27 Giant Turtles......Page 28 Hogzilla......Page 29 Human Giants......Page 31 Mahamba......Page 34 Pygmy Elephant......Page 35 Pygmy Hippopotamus......Page 36 Pygmy Rhinoceros......Page 37 Alien Big Cats......Page 40 British Wolverines......Page 42 Crocodilians......Page 43 Eastern Cougars......Page 44 Freshwater Octopus......Page 46 Freshwater Sharks......Page 47 Ghost Grizzlies......Page 48 New Zealand Moose......Page 49 North American Apes......Page 50 Phantom Kangaroos......Page 52 Piranhas and Pacu......Page 53 Pythons......Page 55 Snakehead Fish......Page 56 Carcharodon megalodon......Page 58 Dodos......Page 60 Ivory-Billed Woodpecker......Page 61 Living Dinosaurs......Page 63 Mammoths......Page 65 Mapinguari......Page 66 Moa......Page 67 Saber-toothed Cat......Page 68 Steller’s Sea Cow......Page 69 Thylacine......Page 71 Almas......Page 74 Bigfoot......Page 76 Fouke Monster......Page 79 Minnesota Iceman......Page 80 Momo......Page 81 Mono Grande......Page 82 Orang Pendek......Page 83 Swamp Ape......Page 85 Yeren......Page 86 Yeti......Page 87 Yowie......Page 89 Bessie......Page 92 Cadborosaurus......Page 93 Champ......Page 95 Chessie......Page 96 Giant Jellyfish......Page 97 Globsters......Page 98 Illie......Page 100 Kraken......Page 102 Memphré......Page 103 Nahuelito......Page 104 Nessie......Page 106 Octopus giganteus......Page 110 Ogopogo......Page 111 Scoliophis atlanticus......Page 113 Selma......Page 115 Tessie......Page 117 Ahool......Page 120 Bighoot......Page 121 Kongamato......Page 123 Kungstorn......Page 125 Mothman......Page 127 Olitau......Page 129 Owlman......Page 130 Ropen......Page 132 Thunderbirds......Page 134 Winged Cats......Page 137 Beast of Bladenboro......Page 142 Beast of Gévaudan......Page 144 El Chupacabra......Page 146 Marozi......Page 150 Mngwa......Page 153 Nandi Bear......Page 155 Queensland Tiger......Page 158 Shunka Warak’in......Page 160 Batsquatch......Page 162 Bunyips......Page 163 Dogmen......Page 168 Dragons......Page 171 Jersey Devil......Page 173 Lizard Men......Page 178 Loveland Frog......Page 180 Merbeings......Page 183 Minhocão......Page 189 Mongolian Death Worm......Page 191 Monkey Man......Page 193 Old Three Toes......Page 195 Popobawa......Page 197 Steller’s Sea Ape......Page 199 Unicorns......Page 201 Who’s Who in Cryptozoology......Page 206 C......Page 208 M......Page 209 V......Page 210 Z......Page 211 Selected Bibliography......Page 212 B......Page 214 G......Page 215 M......Page 216 P......Page 217 U......Page 218 Z......Page 219

cryptozoology Is The Study Of Hidden Animals Entirely Ignored By Mainstream Science Because Many Believe These Animals Do Not Exist; However, Sightings Continue To Be Reported. This Field Guide Chronicles Sightings Of Ninety Three Of These Hidden Creatures. Some Of The Animals Are Thought To Be Extinct, Others Roam In Unnatural Territories, And Others Defy Scientific Logic. From The More Well Known, Such As Giant Piranhas, Nessie, And Bigfoot, To The Less Common, Such As Marozi (a Spotted Lion), Minhocao (a Giant Earthworm), And Mothman (a Large Winged Creature), This Book Presents A Wide Array Of Evidence That These Creatures May Still Be On The Earth. Using A Dispassionate Scholarly Tone, Newton Offers Only A Glimpse Of Each Animal And Instead Focuses On Cataloging The Sightings And Noting The Physical Evidence Collected For Each Creature. This Format Leaves The Reader Wanting To Know More About These Creatures, A Deficit That The Author Compensates For By Including Lists For Further Reading. While The Author's Style And Tone Allow Readers To Make Up Their Own Minds If The Evidence Shows Fact Or Fiction, Sadly They Also Make The Text Lifeless And Very Dull. Overall This Work Provides Some Fascinating Information In A One-stop Source; However, It Will Have Limited Interest And Is Probably Most Suited To Large Library Collections. Reviewer: Rachel Wadham
