Cambridge, Cabi Int. 2008. **Contents Herbals for radiomodulation (radioprotection/radiosensitization) : an overview**Radiomodulatory compounds of herbal origin for new frontiers in medicine, homeland security, management of radiological incidents and space applications **Phytomedicine for radioprotection and management of radiation injuries**Indian medicinal herbs and ayurvedic formulations as potential radioprotectors Irradiation, radioprotection and Nigella sativa Modulation of radiation-induced damage by Serbian natural plant products : implications for radioprotection Phytoceuticals for radioprotection with special reference to Egyptian flora Melatonin mitigates the damaging effects of ionizing radiation Radioprotective effect of citrus and hawthorn extracts against genotoxicity induced by gamma irradiation The healing potential of indigenous essential oils from New Zealand in the prevention and management of radiation-induced mucositis **Biological and behaviouralradioprotection by dietary ingredients/nutraceuticals**Piper betel leaves : a potential gold mine of radioprotective and photoprotective compounds Dietary antioxidants and phytochemicals in radioprotection and therapy Effects of berry fruits on neurocognitive deficits produced by exposure to space radiation Radioprotection by the soy isoflavone genistein Propolis and related flavenoids as radioprotective agents **Elucidation of mechanism of action of herbal radioprotectors (a stepping stone for designing of novel radiomodulators)**Radioprotective effects of Ginkgo biloba via its antioxidant action Novel strategies for protecting mitochondria (the cellular powerhouse) against low-LET radiation : a review Andrographis paniculata : an emerging radioprotective agent for membrane proteins Mitigation of deleterious effects of ionizing radiation by phytoceuticals : mechanistic studies with Centella asiatica **Cancer therapy : the role of radiosensitizers of natural origin**The radiosensitizing effects of L-canavanine Withaferin A - a phytosteroid of promise for tumour sensitization in cancer therapy The radiosensitizer hypericin as adjuvant therapy in the treatment of central nervous system tumours Radiosensitizing activity of the Indian medicinal plant Tinospora cordifolia Miers ex Hook F & Thoms in tumour-bearing mice **Antioxidants and radiotherapy : the enigmatic connection**Do antioxidants reduce the efficacy of radiotherapy? Despite years of research world-over, non-toxic and effective radiomodulators remain elusive. In recent years, there has been a shift towards the use of herbals, which are also apparently being viewed as sources of promising radiomodulatory drugs. This book discusses the potential of radiation countermeasure agents and radiosensitizers of herbal origin, their multifaceted mode of action, specifically the use of the former in a nuclear theatre of operations, rescue operations and deep space missions in addition to their application during radiotherapy.

"This book discusses the potential of radiation countermeasure agents and radiosensitizers of herbal origin, and their multifaceted mode of action, particularly in nuclear operations, rescue operations, deep space missions, and application during radiotherapy. Comprising 22 chapters written by industry, clinical and academic experts, this book will appeal to readers in radiation biology, radiation oncology, military medicine, homeland defence, traditional, holistic and modern medicine, space biology, pharmacology and toxicology."--BOOK JACKET
