It is both a guidebook for visitors to Cambridge and a handbook for the inquirer, wherever he may be, who seeks a general impression of the University.Guidebooks to the grounds and buildings of Harvard University have appeared since 1878, although it was not until 1898 -when the American Association for the Advancement of Science held its annual meeting in Cambridge -that the University itself undertook the preparation of an Official Guide to Harvard University. This work successively passed through six editions, the last in 1929.The present HANDBOOK, inheriting from its predecessors a geographical arrangement which seems best suited to the needs of the visitor, differs from them in being more than a guidebook, for it is concerned primarily with indicating the activities of the University which are outwardly represented by buildings and equipment.The HANDBOOK publishes, for the first time, a concise description of the arrangement and contents of the principal museums. Departments of instruction which have no buildings devoted to their particular use are also mentioned: the sections on Mathematics, the Social Sciences and the Humanities follow the description of the Widener Library (p. 40). A general account of certain aspects of undergraduate instruction and life (pp. 173-182) precedes the descriptions of the seven residential Houses, which are the capstone of the past thirty years' development of Harvard College.The Editor is grateful to the heads of Departments and to many other members of the various Faculties for furnishing material and articles. As it is inevitable that errors and omissions will occur in the preparation of an entirely new text, readers will confer a favor by reporting them for the benefit of future editions.
