This resource for health professionals aims to present a comprehensive overview of the role of clinical nutrition in preserving the health of the elderly—especially those suffering from chronic disease. Contributions from an international panel of scientists and clinicians are organized into four sections: trends in the nutritional aspects of aging, the fundamentals of geriatric nutrition, the effects of nutrition on geriatric syndromes, and clinical topics. All clinical chapters feature treatment guidelines for secondary prevention, management, and therapy. Bales is with Duke U. Medical Center and Ritchie is with the U. of Louisville Schools of Medicine and Public Health. Annotation ©2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Description:This is the second edition of a comprehensive book that covers all aspects of nutrition related to older adults. Although the first edition was published in 2004, this new edition covers many new topics that have emerged over the past five years, making it timely and valuable.
Purpose:It is intended as an up-to-date resource for all healthcare professionals who work with older adults. Given the need for more resources for older adults, this meets the needs very well.
Audience:The book is written for all healthcare professionals who work with older adults. Despite the skew to nutrition strategies, this is a very useful guide for all individuals involved in the care of the elderly. The editors are two well respected individuals in the geriatric nutrition community who were involved in both editions.
Features:The four sections cover nutrition well being, fundamentals of nutrition, common clinical conditions, and new frontiers in preventive nutrition. Each chapter is laid out in the same way, including key points and key words on the first page and practical recommendations at the end. The references at the end of each chapter are comprehensive.
Assessment:The book is easy to navigate, with appropriate tables and charts throughout the chapters. I particularly like the recommendations at the end of each chapter. This book is a valuable tool for all healthcare professionals to use for key take-away points for any issue when working with older adults.
