Flexible bonding and sealants Each contributing author is a scientist, practitioner, engineer, or chemist with an abundance of practical experience in their respective field, making this text an authoritative reference source for any materials scientist or engineer, whether in academia or industry Joining of Materials and Structures is the first and only complete and highly readable treatment of the options for joining conventional materials and the structures they comprise in conventional and unconventional ways, and for joining emerging materials and structures in novel ways. Joining by mechanical fasteners, integral designed-or formed-in features, adhesives, welding, brazing, soldering, thermal spraying, and hybrid processes are addressed as processes and technologies, as are issues associated with the joining of metals, ceramics (including cement and concrete) glass, plastics, and composites (including wood), as well as, for the first time anywhere, living tissue.

While focused on materials issues, issues related to joint design, production processing, quality assurance, process economics, and joint performance in service are not ignored. The book is written for engineers, from an in-training student to a seasoned practitioner by an engineer who chose to teach after years of practice. By reading and referring to this book, the solutions to joining problems will be within one’s grasp.

Key Features:
· Unprecedented coverage of all joining options (from lashings to lasers) in 10 chapters
· Uniquely complete coverage of all materials, including living tissues, in 6 chapters
· Richly illustrated with 76 photographs and 233 illustrations or plots
· Practice Questions and Problems for use as a text of for reviewing to aid for comprehension

Adhesives and sealants are used everywhere; in the electronic components of a computer, in the foam cushioning of a seat; in floor coverings, wallpaper, for metals and composites bonding in cars and airplanes, food packaging, footwear, furniture ... everywhere you look and in almost everything you use.The Handbook of Adhesives and Sealants takes an incredibly thorough and comprehensive look at all aspects of adhesives and sealants; from the chemistry behind them, to the many industrial applications, to surrounding scientific theories and issues. It covers, in systematic detail: All scientific and technical knowledge encompassing the field, including theories, technical characteristics, test methods, design and calculation, surface preparation, and methods and equipment for dispensing and curing. The chemistry and physics of each type of adhesive and sealant, including their properties, formulation, characteristics, various modes of curing, and application techniques. Every industry which uses adhesives and sealants, including recent developments which have introduced adhesives into; electronics, dentistry and surgery, clothes, composites, glass and plastics bonding ...Not just for chemists and engineers involved directly in the field of adhesives and sealants, this reference work offers a broad information base for all scientists, engineers and manufacturers in all industries, students, designers, ... who want a general technical or scientific overview of the area. The Mechanics of Adhesion shows that adhesion science and technology is inherently an interdisciplinary field, requiring fundamental understanding of mechanics, surfaces, and materials. This volume comprises 19 chapters. Starting with a background and introduction to stress transfer principles; fracture mechanics and singularities; and an energy approach to debonding, the volume continues with analysis of structural lap and butt joint configurations. It then continues with discussions of test methods for strength and constitutive properties; fracture; peel; coatings, the case of adhesion to a single substrate; elastomeric adhesives such as sealants. The role of mechanics in determining the locus of failure in bonded joints is discussed, followed by a chapter on rheology relevant to adhesives and sealants. Pressure sensitive adhesive performance; the principles of tack and tack measurements; and contact mechanics relevant to wetting and surface energy measurements are then covered. The volume concludes with sections on fibermatrix bonding and reinforcement; durability considerations for adhesive bonds; ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation of adhesive bonds; and design of adhesive bonds from a strength perspective. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of engineering and to those with an interest in adhesion science.
